ASPECTS OF COMMUNICATION AND THE MENTALLY RETARDED POPULATION: A SELECTED ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: 1978-1993 This retrospective and selected annotated bibliography was developed to provide a body of reference information on various aspects of the communication behavior (speech, language, and hearing) of the mentally retarded population; speech, language, and hearing assessment; communication intervention strategies for mentally retarded individuals; parental intervention strategies and counseling; as well as references on the prevention of communication disorders in the mentally retarded population. The present selected annotated biliography serves as a continuation of Peins' (1969) previously published bibliography on mental retardation and will begin with references from 1970 to 1993 (with some earlier entries included). The criterion for inclusion of any article, book or chapter, was that it had to contain information relevant to oral or non-oral communication and mentally retarded individuals: speech, hearing, or language behavior; prevention of atypical communication behavior; intervention or therapy procedures for speech, language, or hearing; assessment of speech, hearing, and language; augmentative or nonspeech/nonverbal communication; parent/family counseling; parent/family intervention strategies for mentally retarded individuals; or prevention of communication disorders in the mentally retarded population. Hundreds of entries are included and presented in a hypertext document that may be stored on a computer or loaded in a few moments for use. The database is searchable by any word. Items are numbered and indexes lead to entries not searchable in free text. An essential bibliography for the mental health practitioner and scholar. Maryann Peins is Professor Emerita, Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
